Odieng is a small workshop based in Malang, Indonesia, dedicated to building custom handcrafted basses and guitars. Every instrument is made one at a time, with a focus on detail, feel, and character. We work closely with each player to create instruments that are not only visually distinctive, but also deeply personal in sound and response. Driven by craftsmanship and intention, Odieng values quality over quantity. Each build reflects a careful balance between traditional woodworking and a modern understanding of tone and playability resulting in instruments that are made to be played, trusted, and remembered.
Our history
1991
Odieng is a small company based in Malang, Indonesia, specializing in custom handcrafted basses and guitars. It was founded by Andri Odieng, who built his first guitar in 1991. At the time, he couldn’t afford to buy one, so he decided to make it himself. Through studying every guitar reference he could find, he began developing his own designs. By the following year, he started building instruments for people around him.
1998
In 1998, he committed fully to making custom guitars as his profession. As his dedication grew, so did his knowledge and network. He developed a deep understanding of tonewoods, their sonic character, woodworking techniques, product craftsmanship, playability, and sound. Over time, many Indonesian musicians came to admire his work, and Odieng steadily gained recognition.
2005 - 2018
In 2005, 2008, and 2012, three custom bass companies expressed interest in selling Odieng instruments — though without using the Odieng name. In 2018, after years of working with other companies, he chose to focus on building and developing his own brand.
2020 - NOW
At the beginning of 2020, Odieng began expanding into the international market. Our first international artist came from the United States bassist Rod “StuckOnBass” Stuckey. Through him, more musicians in the U.S. discovered Odieng, and many became part of what we now call the Odieng Family.
Odieng is not just about building instruments it’s about building a community. We believe in inclusivity and respect, without discrimination of ethnicity, religion, or race.
